Amboseli National Park

Witness majestic elephant herds against the breathtaking backdrop of Africa's highest mountain in one of Kenya's most iconic landscapes

Overview

Amboseli National Park is the embodiment of classic Africa - a place where massive elephant herds traverse golden savannah grasslands beneath the magnificent snow-capped dome of Mount Kilimanjaro. This 392 square kilometer park offers some of the most spectacular and photogenic wildlife experiences on the continent.

The park's name comes from the Maasai word "Empusel," meaning "salty dust," a reference to the dry lakebed that dominates much of the landscape. But don't let that fool you - Amboseli is teeming with life, sustained by an underground water system fed by Kilimanjaro's melting snows that creates lush swamplands and springs.

Amboseli is globally renowned as the best place in Africa to get close to free-ranging elephants. The park is home to over 1,600 elephants, and thanks to decades of research by the Amboseli Elephant Research Project, these gentle giants are remarkably habituated to vehicles, offering unparalleled viewing and photography opportunities.

The landscape is diverse and dramatic - from the vast dried-up bed of Lake Amboseli to verdant swamps bursting with wildlife, thornbush scrubland, and open plains. The park's unique ecosystem supports an incredible concentration of wildlife, including large predators and over 400 bird species.

What truly sets Amboseli apart is the view. On clear mornings and evenings, Mount Kilimanjaro rises majestically on the southern horizon, creating a backdrop so stunning it's become one of the most photographed scenes in Africa. Watching elephants silhouetted against Kilimanjaro at sunset is a moment that will stay with you forever.

The park also offers rich cultural encounters with the Maasai people, who have lived in harmony with wildlife in this region for centuries, adding another layer of authenticity to your safari experience.
