Lake Naivasha & Crescent Island
Overview
Lake Naivasha is a freshwater jewel nestled in the dramatic Great Rift Valley, offering a serene escape from the bustle of Nairobi. This beautiful lake, surrounded by lush papyrus and acacia forests, is a haven for birdlife and one of Kenya's most accessible nature destinations.
At the heart of this aquatic paradise lies Crescent Island - a truly unique wildlife sanctuary where you can do something extraordinary: walk freely among wild animals without barriers or vehicles. This private sanctuary is one of the few places in Kenya where walking safaris are not just permitted but encouraged, offering an intimate and authentic wildlife experience.
Crescent Island got its name from its distinctive crescent shape when viewed from above, though it's technically a peninsula connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of land that appears during low water levels. The island gained fame as a filming location for the 1985 movie "Out of Africa," and walking its gentle terrain, you'll understand why - the scenery is breathtaking.
The island's 200-acre expanse is home to a remarkable variety of herbivores including giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, waterbuck, impala, and Thomson's gazelles. With no predators on the island, these animals are incredibly relaxed, allowing you to approach within meters for unforgettable photographs and encounters. The experience of walking through tall grass as giraffes browse nearby trees is simply magical.
Lake Naivasha itself is a birdwatcher's dream, hosting over 400 bird species including fish eagles, pelicans, cormorants, and thousands of flamingos during certain seasons. The lake's hippo population is substantial - you'll often spot pods lounging in the water or grazing on shore during evening hours.
Beyond Crescent Island, the lake area offers boat rides to see hippos up close, visits to Hell's Gate National Park for cycling and rock climbing, and the opportunity to explore nearby flower farms that make Kenya one of Europe's largest flower suppliers. It's a destination that combines wildlife, adventure, relaxation, and stunning Rift Valley scenery.
